I have been to Rome on many occasions, but today's Rome trip might be the best one yet.
Today, the school took us to Rome for the second time. Last time, I went to MAXXI, and this time, I went to the Vatican Museums. It was so exciting to see sculptures (ex. Laocoon and His Sons) and paintings (ex. Entombment), as well as the famous Sistine Chapel, all of which we have studied in classroom, come to real life.
Afterwards, I remained in Rome with Holly! We really did not have an agenda, so we decided to first visit the Trevi Fountain. There, I was translating the Latin inscription for Holly, when a group of Asian tourists surrounded me to listen to my translation! For a second, I was very proud of my Latin skills.
Later, we walked around to explore random churches on the way. We actually happened to stop by two churches that we've studied in Art History: San Carlo alle Quattro Fontane and Santa Maria della Vittoria (which has Bernini's Ecstasy of Saint Teresa). Ornateness of every single church in Italy just leaves me in awe.
Because we cannot find ethnic food in Viterbo, we decided to get Mexican food in Rome, which was surprisingly very good. Afterwards, we were walking to the train station (after walking 17-20 km already), we found these old film chips on the ground. We decided to choose one each, and mine is a photo of a street shop with two people under a tent. Having this makes me feel strange; I get a glimpse into the lives of strangers whom I have never met!
Overall, today made me realize that I have made the right decision to come to SYA Italy. I mean, who gets the chance to explore Rome in depth so frequently?
