Sicilia Part 4: Caltagirone & Piazza Armerina

Our first destination of the day was Caltagirone, a small landlocked town in Sicily. This area is famous in Italy for its ceramics and most of all, the famous staircase decorated with ceramic tiles! According to the legend, one can lengthen one's lifetime by 10 years every time one successfully climbs the entire staircase. It is an onerous task, I must admit, but 10 years, really? Let's see if that legend holds some truth!

Having said goodbye to Caltagirone after only a couple of hours, we drove to Piazza Armerina, which is known for its well-preserved Villa Romana. Having eaten/drunk a cup of cold Sicilian granita, I was ready for the scavenger hunt, which our group won! We found all the frescoes that the teachers asked us to identify. Unfortunately, I was not able to take the photos of the villa, but here is a map that I managed to take a photo of before my phone died! As the map suggests, there was a ton to see there (and therefore very easy to get lost). Definitely a hidden gem worth visiting :)

After a while, we headed for Agrigento. Today was definitely less stressful/packed than other days, partially because most of today was spent on the bus trying to go from eastern Sicily to western Sicily. So hopefully, Agrigento has a lot to offer us tomorrow!
